Susan Lane thankfully doesn’t recall giving birth to 10-pound, 6 ounce Edward Hudson Lane, II. However, her husband Doug does, and still is in awe that such a fat baby would one day make a living in sports. While Ed's passion for athletics couldn't quite sell high school coaches (much less anyone in the NCAA or professional ranks), Ed found the role of media personality to be the ideal fit to exercise his passion for sports and entertainment.
Born in Altavista, VA and raised 30 minutes north in Lynchburg (after a pit stop in Hickory, NC), Ed Lane is a native Virginian who began his radio career at age 14 as an intern for WLNI-FM in Lynchburg. Once known as “Easy Ed” for his laid-back demeanor, Ed began his internship as a call screener and guest-coordinator for The Sportsline. He then“took his talents” south to Memphis working for WHBQ-AM as a producer and fill-in host.
After graduating from Rhodes College with a Bachelor's degree in History, Ed joined the ESPN Southside team as Executive Producer. Ed also helped create Southside Connection and served as co-host until taking over the show in May 2009 and hosting Southside Connection through September 2013. He also serve as play-by-play broadcaster for high school football, basketball, soccer, field hockey and baseball, while juggling duties as Station Manager. His duties included managing day-to-day operations and sales (Ed consistently accounted for over 50% of the station revenue). In addition to being a radio personality, Ed hosted Southside Connection on BTW-21 TV every Monday evening.
In September 2013, Ed accepted an opportunity to join the Virginia Talk Radio Network, co-hosting The Sportsline on 3 FM news talk stations in Roanoke-Blacksburg, Lynchburg and Danville, Virginia. The staple of Ed's work in both radio and TV is his ability to make passionate arguments on a myriad of subjects, from local sports to college football and basketball, the NFL and NASCAR. He also serves as an account manager and a weekend reporter for AP Radio.
It is Ed's objective to build on his early successes and carve out a long, successful career as a well-rounded and respected sports personality, while also serving as a team player.
In his down time, Ed enjoys spending time with his wife Meade and their 2 golden retrievers, along with reading books, playing disc golf, traveling, and watching documentaries.
